The vision is based on the following:

 Engagement

One of the main goals of Chess Tromsø 2014 AS (CT2014) is to create engagement in the sport of chess and the Chess Olympiad locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.  The Chess Olympiad 2014 shall, with a base in Tromsø and Northern Norway, recruit and involve supporters, politicians, business, tourism, schools and others to take part in CT2014 in different ways. CT2014 will create an awareness of the sport of chess and the event nationally and internationally, while also promoting North Norwegian business and tourism outside of our region. The term engagement is also associated with words such as inspire and interest.

Develop

Another main goal of CT2014 is that the project will contribute to development on several levels. Chess is called “the ultimate intellectual sport” and is associated with creativity, strategy, knowledge and smartness. CT2014 aims to develop the knowledge and intellect of children and young people through playing chess. Furthermore, the project also has a goal to develop and create lasting new skills in the Tromsø region and Northern Norway. The business sector shall as a partner of CT2014 be associated with chess as a knowledge-based sports and the Olympiad shall through this vision increase the focus on knowledge-based businesses. The culture, hotel, travel and IT industries will also be able to develop new products and expertise as a result of participating in the event. CT2014 will set a new standard for future Chess Olympiads. Through a special focus on culture (side events) and new communication solutions CT2014 will be remembered as an exciting new Olympic concept. The term may also be associated with words such as innovative and create.

Creating good encounters between people

The third main goal of the vision is that CT2014 will create good encounters between people. With its 150 participating nations, the Chess Olympiad represents a meeting place for players from all over the world. Tromsø will be known as a warm, hospitable, international and inclusive city. It is important to ensure that players, locals, tourists, journalists, delegates and other visitors shall experience this. CT2014 will offer a vibrant downtown area with cultural events indoors and outdoors and create an experience for participants and spectators that reach beyond the sporting aspects of the Olympiad.

Chess is a “gentlemen’s sport” in which players are not known for showing poor sportsmanship. A loss is not because the opponent is good, but because you made a mistake. CT2014 wishes to use the Chess Olympiad as an arena for cooperation and a meeting place by focusing on the sport’s inherent competitive values.
